iPhone Tip: Use A Silent Ringtone For Incoming Calls

Posted by Matthew Snider with 11 Comments

Have you ever wanted to silence your phone calls on the iPhone? I mean really silence them, no ring, no vibrate, period?

I have for numerous reasons such as telemarketers, friends, mothers-in-law and even just when I am sleeping. There are times that I don’t want to be annoyed to have to check the phone to see who is calling and then just continue to let it ring.

It is rather easy to do this on any iDevice that accepts calls (yes the iPad does accept calls, jailbreak it!). This little trick allows you to add a “silent” ringtone to your iPhone via iTunes and works like a charm.

To get started you will need to download the “silent” ringtone itself. You can download it here.

First you will need to drag and drop the file into iTunes to set it up as a ringtone that you can manage and then sync onto your iPhone.

Sync is the next step. iOS5 folks will need to sync from your phone or iOS4 folks you can sync from iTunes itself.

Once sync’d, grab your phone and hit up the contacts section. If you already know of someone you want to silence, hit up their contact. If not, grab the annoying person’s number and add it as a contact.

Make sure to set the ringtone as silence.

There are apps out there that can do above and beyond what this trick does for you such as MrNumber. I would rather have a trick than yet another app to use or manage.

Are you downloading this as you comment below? Will you use this for your mother-in-law? Let us know who you plan on silencing!

  1. Great tip! The funniest part of the post is the name you gave the caller! haha… hope I’m not listed like that in anyone’s contacts!

  2. Simple and effective. Nice hack, man!

  3. Sweet hack. Also, if I don’t want to take calls or anything (church, sleeping, etc.), I’ll throw it into Airplane mode.

    • Airplane mode FTW! That saved my battery last month when I was on top of a mountain in Colorado. No service… so just threw it in Airplane mode and was still able to play games before bed!

  4. This is a nice thing to pull some tricks off! Only if we could get the silence ringtone onto someone’s iPhone in a different way. Already laughing at people looking at their iPhone and going: 7 missed calls? Ah?

  5. I like how you think this is a “hack”. I don’t see anything getting modified other that “built-in” features. Other than recording silence and making that a ringtone is the only “work” Matthew did. Great tips though. Just my 5 cents … off to troll another site

  6. to silence calls from politicians
