This last week our family was on vacation and it was fabulous. With the exception of 2 brief interruptions from work it was relaxing and fun.

  • No chores to do
  • No emails to reply to
  • No blogs to read/write (gasp!)
  • No deadlines to sweat about

It was a slice of Heaven (speaking of slices if you’re ever in Rockaway, Oregon you’ve gotta visit Upper Crust Pizza).

Anyway, we’re big fans of Mac toys and tools here on Geek for i so you’d be safe in assuming that my iPhone and iPad accompanied us on vacation.

Before diving into the cool and practical applications of mobile iDevices for your next vacation a few words of caution:

Do not let technology or toys get in the way of your vacation. You can’t live your getaway through a screen. Set boundaries and stick to them.

Interact in real time with real people in real life.

Okay, stepping off the soap box now.

With the near limitless supply of imagination it’s really hard not to say “there’s an app for that” even when you’re on vacation.

- Don’t have room to pack all the board and card games? There are apps for that (Monopoly, Scrabble, UNO, etc)

- Need a little quiet time amidst the mayhem of sand castles and s’mores? There are apps for that (Kindle, iBooks, MONEY Magazine, WIRED, etc).

- Visiting a new town and need to find the best pizza? There are apps for that (Urbanspoon, Yelp, etc)

- Want to capture and share photos of your adventures? There are apps for that (Instagram, Camera+, Diptic, etc)

iPhones and iPads are great tools to have along on vacation, but if you know that you won’t respect healthy boundaries you can have the best vacation by leaving the most innovative mobile technology at home.

How do you use technology on vacation? Do you like to take a digital fast during family getaways?
